The stunning Grade II listed red brick and terracotta beauty is another gem in the portfolio of Alfred Waterhouse. Originally built for the Refuge Assurance Company, before becoming the Palace (a moniker that some Mancunians refuse to move on from!), the building is now known simply as The Refuge. The interior is now home to one of the most welcoming bar and restaurant in the city, hosting regular parties with the slogan ‘come as you are’ the ethos behind the enterprise. The outside retains its original period beauty and is truly one of the most magnificent buildings in Manchester, bestriding Oxford Road and Whitworth Street. This was a particularly great morning to capture it as the Sun strains to break through the low hanging fog that appears to envelope the building.
