Since falling into a state of disrepair some years earlier, this row of shops in Eastford Square Collyhurst had become a bleak reminder of what underdevelopment in some of Manchester’s less affluent areas looks like. The brutalist sculpture in the foreground set against the row of now defunct shops in the background makes it look like it belongs to another era and indeed it does. It has been featured on many TV programmes as the archetypal “rough estate” but I just love the fact that it belongs to a simpler time of community.
